Operating under the platform of “Concerned Federal Lawmakers,” the legislators asked President Tinubu to instruct the Attorney-General of the Federation to, as soon as possible, discontinue the prosecution of Kanu. They argued that a political solution is vital for restoring calm, fostering reconciliation, and resolving longstanding issues affecting national unity.

Dominic, Chief Ugwu Emmanuel, Daniel Asama Ago, Chike John Okafor, Adam Ogene Ogbaru, Emeka Martin Chinedu, Chimaobi Sam, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Donatus Matthew, Ibe Osonwa, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Thaddeus Atta, Udema H. Okonkwo, Cyril Godwin, Princess Chinwe Nnabuike, Kana Nkemkama, Peter Aniekwe, Gwachem Maureen, Onwunka, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nwobosi Joseph, Amobi Godwin, Blessing Amadi, Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, Dr. Joshua Audu Gana, Chris Nkwonta, Emeka Idu, Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Matthew Nwogu, Tochukwu Okere, Benedict Etanabene, Godwin Offiono, Ngozi Okolie, and Nnamdi Ezechi, stressed that resolving the issue through dialogue is necessary to secure lasting peace.

The lawmakers stated that their request was driven by the urgent need for national reconciliation, ongoing insecurity in the Southeast, and multiple domestic and international legal pronouncements in Kanu’s favour. They also noted the government’s previous engagements with other agitating groups, insisting that similar political considerations should be extended in this case.

In their message to the President, the lawmakers urged him to direct the Attorney-General to halt the prosecution and subsequently open a constructive dialogue aimed at achieving a fair political settlement. They expressed gratitude to the President for considering their plea and reaffirmed their respect for his office.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.

The focus, according to the administration, is on infrastructure development, security, and growth-driven investments aimed at improving living standards.
