Alarm Raised Over Rising Mental Health Crisis Among Nigerian Journalists.

Published

on

A leading psychiatrist has raised concerns over the increasing prevalence of stress and mental health disorders among journalists in Nigeria. Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Shehu, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), described these conditions as significant threats to the journalism profession both locally and globally.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Dr. Shehu delivered his warning while presenting a paper titled “Pressure Amid Deadline: Psychiatric/Mental Health Precautions” at the 2025 Retreat of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

He highlighted that the fast-paced and high-pressure environment of journalism exposes practitioners to chronic stress, trauma, depression, and other psychological challenges. “Journalists are stressed and constantly pressured to meet deadlines and break the news. Even though stress is always around us, the only place you stay without stress is the graveyard,” he remarked.

Dr. Shehu explained that journalists frequently witness tragic and traumatic events firsthand, which can gradually affect their mental stability. He compared journalists to military personnel, noting that both groups are often exposed to gory and distressing scenes, making them highly susceptible to trauma.

He warned that without proactive attention to mental health, the journalism sector risks losing more professionals to depression, suicide, and stress-related illnesses. He encouraged journalists to seek medical and emotional support when overwhelmed, develop healthier work routines, recognize stress triggers early, and ensure adequate rest and sleep.

To underline his point, Dr. Shehu cited cases of journalists who died by suicide or from untreated depression, emphasizing the need to prioritize psychological wellbeing alongside physical health.

The match began with an immediate impact from Arsenal, as Kai Havertz capitalized on a pass from Leandro Trossard to put the London club ahead within the first six minutes. Arsenal maintained their lead for much of the first half, successfully frustrating the French champions.

The momentum shifted in the 63rd minute when a VAR review resulted in a penalty for PSG. Ousmane Dembélé stepped up to the spot and converted two minutes later, bringing the score level at 1-1. Despite intense efforts from both sides during the remainder of regulation and throughout extra time, neither team could find a winning goal.

The title was ultimately decided by penalties. In the shootout, PSG held their nerve, with Lucas Beraldo converting their final spot-kick. With Arsenal needing to score to force sudden death, defender Gabriel Magalhães sent his effort over the bar, sealing a 4-3 victory for the French side.

This triumph marks a historic achievement for PSG, who become the first French club to win the UEFA Champions League title in two consecutive seasons, having defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 final.
