El-Rufai Sounds Alarm: North Must Embrace Digital Technology Now Or Risk Being Left Behind
Former Kaduna Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai has urged Northern Nigeria to fully embrace digital technology and integrate it into all sectors of development. Speaking at the Fasahar Zamani Digital Technology Movie Premiere at Ceedi Plaza Cinema, Abuja, El-Rufai emphasized the need for greater technological adoption in the region. The film, produced by Blue Sapphire Hub with funding from the United Kingdom’s Development International, consists of 12 episodes in Hausa with English subtitles, aimed at bridging the digital divide in Northern Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries from across the North, El-Rufai, who previously served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under President Olusegun Obasanjo, expressed concern over the slow pace of digital integration in the region. He called on Northern governors to prioritize investment in digital infrastructure, support digital entrepreneurs, and provide seed funding to ensure the sustainability of tech-driven businesses.
“El-Rufai said Northern Nigeria is yet to fully embrace the tech age. We need strategies to make technology appealing and accessible to our youth,” officials present reported. He added that initiatives like the 12-episode movie could spark interest among young people and their parents in the importance of digital adoption, particularly as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly prominent.
El-Rufai further highlighted the potential of digital technology in future elections, noting its successful deployment in local government elections in Kaduna. He suggested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could leverage digital tools for the 2027 elections.
Idongesit Udoh, Country Lead and Programme Advisor for the U.K. Government’s Global Digital Access Programme, praised the project as a vital effort to include marginalized groups in Nigeria’s growing digital economy. Udoh emphasized that while Nigeria’s digital economy is expanding rapidly, many women, persons with disabilities, and underserved communities remain excluded, and projects like Fasahar Zamani aim to address these gaps.
