DR Congo booked their place in the final by narrowly defeating Cameroon 1-0 at Stade El Barid. The match appeared destined for extra time until Chancel Mbemba produced a decisive moment in stoppage time, calmly directing Brian Cipenga’s corner into the net and silencing the Cameroonian side. The loss ends Cameroon’s campaign, denying the five-time African champions a spot in the expanded 48-team tournament next year, after previously losing an automatic qualification opportunity to Cape Verde, which will participate in the World Cup for the first time.
Earlier, Nigeria secured their place in the final with a 4-1 victory over Gabon at Moulay Hassan Stadium. The Super Eagles initially looked set for a straightforward win when Akor Adams scored in the 78th minute, only for Mario Lemina to equalize for Gabon with a late deflected strike. The setback did not halt Nigeria’s momentum, as Chidera Ejuke restored the lead in extra time with his first goal for the national team, followed by two decisive strikes from Victor Osimhen to seal a comprehensive victory.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s final in Morocco, with the winner advancing to a six-team intercontinental playoff in Mexico in March 2026. The outcome of that round will determine the final two teams to join the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
