Historic Red Card Puts Ronaldo’s World Cup Start in Doubt.

Published

According to Nivo News, Cristiano Ronaldo could miss Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the first red card of his international career. The Al Nassr forward was sent off in Portugal’s 2–0 loss to the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ronaldo initially received a yellow card in the 61st minute for elbowing Irish defender Dara O’Shea during an aerial challenge. After a VAR review, the referee upgraded the caution to a straight red for violent conduct.

The dismissal was Ronaldo’s first in 226 appearances for Portugal, although he has received 13 red cards at club level. FIFA disciplinary rules state that violent conduct carries a minimum one-match ban, with the potential for a longer suspension depending on the severity of the incident. Notably, such bans only apply to competitive fixtures and cannot be served during pre-World Cup friendlies.

Portugal, needing a win to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, fell to two late goals from Troy Parrott at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. Despite the defeat, Portugal remains at the top of Group F, two points clear of Hungary. A win against Armenia on Sunday would confirm their place in the tournament and possibly allow Ronaldo to feature in a record sixth World Cup.

Before the match, Ronaldo acknowledged the challenges of playing in Dublin, praising the support of Irish fans while anticipating a tough atmosphere. Following the red card, he responded to jeering supporters with sarcastic claps and gestures as he left the pitch. Tensions with Irish fans have escalated in recent years, including a controversial moment in the reverse fixture when Ronaldo was accused of influencing the referee before Rúben Neves scored a last-minute winner.
