on

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has issued a firm condemnation of on-set violence following a viral altercation involving producer and actress Peggy Ovire and actor Taye Arimoro. According to Nivo News, the guild reacted to a trending video and voice note that captured an actor being “brutally assaulted” by a producer and members of her crew during a film shoot.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The incident occurred during a late-night production in Lagos and reportedly escalated when Arimoro attempted to leave after completing his contracted work hours around midnight. In his account shared via Instagram Live, he alleged that Ovire’s team prevented him from driving off, deflated his tyres, and physically attacked him, leaving him with injuries to his lips and gums.

Ovire, however, refuted the accusations through Instagram Stories, claiming that Arimoro became hostile first and assaulted her production manager and driver, whom she said suffered a bleeding ear. She maintained that the actor was only asked to complete “two quick scenes.”

The controversy intensified on November 13 when CCTV footage emerged online showing Ovire and members of her team clustered around Arimoro’s car in a heated confrontation, with visible physical contact. Although the footage is of low quality and does not clearly confirm who initiated the violence, it has sparked widespread public criticism.

In its official reaction, the AGN expressed alarm over the circulating clips and stated that no actor should ever face physical abuse, intimidation, or any form of degrading treatment while carrying out professional duties. The guild emphasised that such behaviour violates the ethical standards of Nigeria’s creative industry and urged filmmakers to adopt proper dispute-resolution channels instead of resorting to violence.

According to Nivo News, the AGN disclosed that its National Task Force has begun a thorough investigation and urged the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) to immediately identify the producer involved and enforce appropriate disciplinary actions in line with industry codes.

The guild reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the dignity, welfare, and safety of actors, pledging to continue working with related bodies to uphold professionalism within Nollywood. As of the time of filing this report, neither of the parties involved has issued a public apology, and the AGN has restated its dedication to protecting practitioners across the industry.

Hands Off Our Police! Senate Leader Issues Explosive Warning To Shield State Force From Governors And Cabals!.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has emphasized that any proposed state police services must possess guaranteed financial independence to protect them from potential manipulation by governors, political actors, criminal elements, and other powerful interests. Bamidele, who is also the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, proposed that funding for these services should be placed on a first-line charge as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key aspects of Bamidele’s proposal and the National Assembly’s approach include:

  • Addressing Stakeholder Concerns: Bamidele acknowledged that fears regarding the potential abuse of state police by influential individuals are legitimate and well-founded, noting that these concerns are partially rooted in Nigeria’s experience with regional police control during the First Republic.

  • Multi-layered Safeguards: The National Assembly is working to develop a system of checks and safeguards designed to ensure professional discipline, institutional independence, and financial autonomy.

  • Judiciary-Style Funding: To prevent police chiefs from being subject to the “whims and caprices” of state governors, Bamidele suggested a funding model similar to that of the judiciary, which is protected under the Constitution and does not require routine executive approval.

  • Constitutional Guarantees: Bamidele stated that the 1999 Constitution should provide guaranteed funding sources for both State Commissioners of Police and State Police Service Commissions.

  • Continued Engagement: The National Assembly intends to maintain stakeholder engagement throughout the constitutional amendment process required to establish state police services across the country.
