Peter Obi Brands Wike-Naval Officer Clash in Abuja a “National Embarrassment”
According to Nivo News, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a Nigerian Navy officer, describing it as a “national embarrassment.” Obi, in a statement on Wednesday via his account, said the incident calls for serious national reflection.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The altercation occurred on Tuesday in Abuja when soldiers blocked Wike and his entourage from accessing a parcel of land in the Gaduwa district. The encounter escalated after officials accompanying Wike protested against the restriction. Speaking to journalists at the scene, Wike accused former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, of using military personnel to intimidate civilians over a land development project for which he allegedly holds no approval documents.
Wike maintained that the project was unauthorized and insisted that he would not be intimidated, vowing to prevent any illegal development.
In his reaction, Obi criticized the confrontation as unnecessary, emphasizing that the incident raises broader questions about governance in Nigeria, particularly the role of the military in civil matters and the conduct of public officials. He noted that when officials act beyond institutional norms and security agencies are misused, both governance and public trust are weakened.
Obi stressed the importance of building institutions that operate according to due process, rather than a culture of impunity. He wrote, “The recent needless altercation between the FCT Minister and a Naval officer reflects the growing institutional disorder in our country. What should have been a routine civic matter has become a national embarrassment.”
He added that incidents like this undermine respect for institutions, blur the line between administrative authority and security duties, and set a poor example for the younger generation. Obi called for a Nigeria where public office is exercised with humility and restraint, security personnel are respected, and the rule of law is upheld without bias.
