Diri Stands His Ground: Refuses To Force Deputy Into APC Defection.

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has reiterated that he will not compel his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside him.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Governor Diri, who officially joined the APC on November 3 after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15, said his leadership style is anchored on dialogue, persuasion, and mutual respect rather than political coercion.

Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, on Wednesday, the governor addressed ongoing speculations about his deputy’s political alignment. He stated, “Let me address an issue that has been a subject of speculation in the media. I do not intend to force anyone to join the APC. I can only appeal to them to see reason with me. I might have the power today, but not tomorrow.”

Governor Diri acknowledged that it is often challenging for a governor and deputy to belong to different political parties, but noted that discussions between him and Ewhrudjakpo were ongoing and showing encouraging signs. “It is actually difficult for the governor to be on one side and the deputy on another. But we will continue to talk, and we might end up at the same party tomorrow,” he said.

He also confirmed that the lawsuit filed by Ewhrudjakpo at the Federal High Court in Abuja—aimed at preventing the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from impeaching him for refusing to defect—had been withdrawn. Diri explained that the decision was reached following private dialogue and mutual understanding between both leaders.

The governor emphasized that his administration’s focus remains on peace, unity, and development rather than political tension. “We must not heat up the polity. We are done with violence in Bayelsa State. We are brothers, and we are one. Politics should be for the development of the state, not for fighting one another,” he declared.

On reports of armed men allegedly entering the state, Diri dismissed the claims as baseless and described them as fake news. He assured residents that Bayelsa remains one of the most secure states in the country, adding that security agencies are fully prepared to address any genuine threat.

He urged citizens to report security concerns through appropriate channels instead of spreading falsehoods on social media.

During the meeting, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, presented the governor with an award from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum recognizing Bayelsa as the “Best State in Health Insurance Service Delivery.” Similarly, the Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Daniel Igali, presented a “Distinguished Governor Award for Outstanding Support to SWAN and Contribution to Sports Development in Nigeria,” awarded by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.

Speaking to the press in Abakaliki on Sunday, the Senator pointed to the precedent set by former Governor Sam Egwu, who successfully served two terms in the Senate, to argue that the alleged one-term policy lacks binding authority. Highlighting his own constituency initiatives and record, Nwebonyi stated he faces no serious competition for his seat and emphasized that public service should be defined by sacrifice rather than personal gain.

Additionally, the Senator expressed strong support for the APC’s prospects in Ebonyi State and lauded President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing infrastructure development in the South-East. He further praised Governor Francis Nwifuru as a unifying leader, dismissing rumors of friction within the Izzi clan and calling on stakeholders to prioritize the state’s collective development over divisive politics.

The festivities, which began after 2 p.m. at the Emirates Stadium, wound through Highbury, Canonbury, and Upper Street before concluding back at the stadium. During the event, fans were seen climbing trees and rooftops to see Mikel Arteta’s squad as the players showcased the Premier League trophy. The procession included four buses, one of which carried the Arsenal Women’s team, winners of the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup this past February.

This celebration followed a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, where Arsenal ultimately fell in a penalty shootout after misses by Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes. Despite the European defeat, the Premier League title held immense significance for the team, coming after three consecutive seasons as runners-up. Reflecting on the massive turnout, journalist Matt Graveling described the celebration as the largest sporting event he had witnessed in his 15-year career.
