Speaking through his Special Adviser, Hon. Kehinde Bamigbetan, during a lecture to participants of Course 34 at the Nigerian Defence College, Abuja, Alake stated that the government’s renewed efforts are aimed at sanitising the solid minerals sector and boosting national revenue.
He noted that the Mining Marshals, established to provide enforcement within the sector, have made significant progress in curbing illegal activities. The minister disclosed that plans are underway to scale up the agency’s logistics, weapons, and operational reach across all 774 local government areas to ensure better protection of mining sites and personnel.
Highlighting the achievements of the Marshals, Alake revealed that within one year, 90 mining sites have been reclaimed from bandits and illegal operators, over 300 suspects prosecuted, and 450 threatened sites placed under strict surveillance.
He commended the Nigerian Army, Police, and other security agencies for their collaboration, which has helped ensure seamless operations and reduced inter-agency conflicts.
Dr. Alake further explained that the value chain of the solid minerals sector includes licensing, exploration, community engagement, extraction, processing, and sales. He said his administration’s Seven-Point Agenda has streamlined the sector, blocked financial leakages, and enhanced transparency.
According to the minister, the ministry’s revenue has grown remarkably — from ₦6 billion in 2022 to ₦12 billion in 2024, and ₦26 billion as of October 2025. He attributed this growth to stricter enforcement of compliance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act.
He disclosed that over 3,700 mining titles have been revoked for non-payment of annual service fees and failure to engage in actual mining operations, warning that companies must now comply with the Community Development Agreement and environmental obligations.
To attract global investors, Alake added that the establishment of the Nigeria Solid Minerals Company has opened new opportunities for joint ventures and partnerships.
Responding on behalf of the Nigerian Defence College participants, Air Commodore Olushola Oluokun, the Director of Information, Communications, and Technology, expressed appreciation to the minister for an enlightening presentation that deepened their understanding of Nigeria’s solid minerals development and economic growth strategy.
