According to Nivo News, Jarigbe’s resignation letter was read during Tuesday’s plenary session by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the proceedings. In the letter, the lawmaker attributed his decision to the persistent internal crises and divisions within the PDP.
He explained that after careful reflection, he concluded that the APC presented a more stable and progressive platform capable of advancing the interests of his constituents.
“I rise to formally notify the Senate leadership of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, on whose platform I was elected to represent the good people of Cross River North Senatorial District,” Jarigbe stated. “The decision was made after deep and thoughtful reflection on the current state of my former party. Unfortunately, irreconcilable differences and persistent internal factions at both the national and state levels have made it impossible to continue.”
The senator further expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and that of the National Assembly, describing the APC as a platform committed to stability and progress.
With Jarigbe’s defection, the number of APC senators in the upper chamber has reportedly risen to 77, strengthening the party’s control in the Senate.

In separate releases on Wednesday, the opposition party and its 2027 gubernatorial hopeful, Michael Aondoakaa, slammed Governor Alia, alleging a lack of effective leadership and an inability to safeguard citizens. Conversely, the governor hit back, claiming that the opposition is cynically capitalizing on a security disaster for political mileage.
Speaking through its Publicity Secretary, Bright Antyo, the PDP condemned the administration’s sluggish reaction to ongoing violence. Aondoakaa further charged that the state government is prioritizing the suppression of dissent over tackling the root causes of insecurity. He lamented that communities remain vulnerable to constant invasions and farmer displacements, yet officials treat public criticism as a graver threat than the attackers themselves, noting that the bloodshed persists despite government denials.
In his defense, Governor Alia, via his Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula, argued that the crisis demands collective compassion and unity instead of partisan assaults. The governor emphasized that his administration remains deeply committed to tackling insecurity by providing security agencies with robust logistics, intelligence support, personnel motivation, and collaboration with local vigilante networks to restore lasting peace.
