Speaking during an interview with Arise Television, Huizinga criticised Abuja’s approach to the crisis, describing it as “dismissive” and lacking urgency. According to Nivo News, the congressman said the pattern of killings and destruction in several parts of Nigeria suggested an organised and targeted campaign against Christians.
Huizinga stressed the need for the United States and the international community to act promptly to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe similar to those witnessed in Rwanda and South Sudan. He disclosed that he had personally met with survivors and religious leaders who claimed they were being deliberately targeted in repeated assaults on their homes and places of worship.
The congressman urged the Nigerian authorities to adopt stronger and more decisive measures to safeguard citizens, insisting that mere assurances were no longer enough. He called for clear strategies to address the worsening insecurity, warning that continued violence could destabilise not only Nigeria but the entire West African region.
Huizinga stated, “We were too late on Rwanda, too late on South Sudan, and other atrocities in Africa and around the world. Let’s not be too late again on this one.” He noted that extremist groups, including radicalised elements among the Fulani, had been responsible for attacks targeting both moderate Muslims and Christians.
He emphasised that the scale and coordination of some incidents, such as the massacre of about 200 Christians on Christmas Eve a few years ago, showed that these were not random conflicts but deliberate assaults.
“I’m not convinced that the Nigerian government has taken the situation seriously,” he said, adding that Abuja must demonstrate tangible efforts to protect vulnerable communities and reduce the rising tide of violence.
Huizinga reiterated that Nigeria’s stability is crucial to the peace and economic growth of the African continent, warning that continued inaction could have far-reaching regional consequences.

In his defense, Governor Alia, via his Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula, argued that the crisis demands collective compassion and unity instead of partisan assaults. The governor emphasized that his administration remains deeply committed to tackling insecurity by providing security agencies with robust logistics, intelligence support, personnel motivation, and collaboration with local vigilante networks to restore lasting peace.
