No More Extensions: Nigeria’s Senate Orders NAFDAC To End Sachet Alcohol Sales

Published

The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant regulatory bodies to fully implement the ban on high-strength alcoholic beverages sold in sachets, effective December 2025, without any further extensions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Lawmakers emphasized that the existing moratorium will not be extended and called on the industry to adhere strictly to the agreed deadline. The resolution follows a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong, who urged the Senate to prevent attempts by some manufacturers to delay the ban.

Senator Ekpeyong highlighted that NAFDAC introduced the phased ban following extensive consultations and in alignment with international best practices. He noted that a 2018 Memorandum of Understanding, signed by key stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, committed to a gradual phase-out of sachet alcohol due to public health concerns.

He explained that the affordability and portability of sachet alcohol have made it easily accessible to children, teenagers, commercial drivers, and other vulnerable groups, increasing addiction, risky behavior, and long-term health complications. Although a one-year moratorium was granted in 2024 to allow manufacturers to clear existing stock and transition to safer packaging, some producers are now lobbying for another extension, which Ekpeyong described as a threat to public health and regulatory authority.

The Senate called on the Federal Ministry of Health to remove any obstacles preventing NAFDAC from enforcing the ban fully and stressed that bureaucratic delays or political interference must not impede the regulatory agency. Lawmakers also urged the Ministry to fast-track the National Alcohol Policy, which will formally prohibit sachet packaging of high-strength alcohol, provide a framework for nationwide public education, and guide communities on its risks.

The Senate affirmed that the health and safety of Nigerians must take precedence over commercial interests, underlining the urgency of ending the widespread abuse of cheap, easily accessible alcoholic beverages.

Breaking: Saraki Traces Clash With Executive To Stubborn Stance On Foreign Loan Approvals!.

Published

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki recently shared his experience advocating for fiscal accountability during his tenure from 2015 to 2019. Speaking at the Global Strategic Advisory Group meeting in Lake Como, Italy, he reflected on the challenges he faced while pushing for open budget hearings, reforms in petroleum sector governance, and the recovery of unremitted government revenues.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Saraki highlighted several key points from his discussion:

  • Opposition to Foreign Borrowing: Saraki stated that he faced significant political resistance when he challenged the executive branch to properly justify the purpose and impact of foreign loan requests. He noted that these loans were often treated as “free gifts,” despite the long-term burden of repayment.

  • Economic Sovereignty: Warning against a permanent state of external dependency, he argued that Nigeria’s reliance on foreign aid and borrowing undermines the nation’s economic independence.

  • Domestic Resource Mobilization: He pointed out that Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio—approximately 6%—is among the lowest globally, especially when compared to the 15.6% average in Sub-Saharan Africa and the 34% average among OECD nations.

  • Call for Reform: Saraki emphasized that low tax ratios are the result of deliberate political choices, suggesting that current leadership must prioritize building stronger institutions and improving domestic resource mobilization to move away from aid dependency.
