Bode George Blasts Court Over PDP Convention Ban, Calls For CJN’s Intervention
According to Nivo News, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has strongly criticised the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which halted the party’s planned national elective convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
George condemned the October 31 ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho, describing it as “a recipe for anarchy” and contrary to existing Supreme Court decisions that recognize party congresses and conventions as purely internal affairs.
Speaking during a press conference at his Lagos office on Wednesday, George expressed disappointment that the judge issued an order stopping the PDP convention despite numerous judicial precedents affirming that internal party matters are beyond the jurisdiction of the courts.
He noted that the Supreme Court had consistently held that disputes concerning the election of party executives are non-justiciable and do not fall within the purview of any court. “Issues about a political party’s congress to elect its officers are strictly internal affairs and not for the courts to determine,” he stated.
The PDP chieftain emphasized that only matters arising from party primary elections, as stipulated in Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022, are open to judicial intervention. “A congress to elect officers is part of a party’s internal management and not justiciable,” he added.
Faulting Justice Omotosho’s ruling, George accused the judge of imposing a personal interpretation contrary to the Supreme Court’s established legal principles. “In his judgment stopping the PDP Convention, Justice Omotosho is trying to inject his own opinion into what the apex court has clearly interpreted. The judiciary has no business in a party’s internal affairs,” he said.
He urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to “call the judge to order,” warning that such rulings could jeopardize the country’s political stability. George also criticised the judge for not inviting officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who supervised the PDP congresses, to verify the facts before issuing the order.
“INEC has not raised any objection, yet the judge didn’t seek their input. So, what’s the motive? Is he working for another party?” George queried. He cautioned that unnecessary judicial interference could undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress.
He reaffirmed that since its establishment in 1998, the PDP has always followed due process in organizing its congresses and conventions. “It is not the duty of any court to meddle in the internal electoral processes of a political party,” he asserted.
George lamented that the controversial ruling had already led to the deployment of security personnel to the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, allegedly in support of a minority faction. He warned that the country is at a delicate political juncture and called for calm, dialogue, and commitment to democratic ideals.
“Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. What we need now is restraint, dialogue, and renewed dedication to democratic principles,” he said.
Reaffirming the PDP’s stand, George concluded that the party remains devoted to peace, unity, and the preservation of Nigeria’s democracy.
