Wike Slams PDP Chair Damagum as ‘Tax Collector’ Amid Party Turmoil
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday launched a scathing critique of the embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Amb. Umar Damagum. According to Nivo News, Wike described Damagum as a “tax collector” lacking the discipline and integrity necessary to lead the opposition party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on the television programme Politics Today, Wike claimed that Damagum had struggled to manage his legal affairs during internal PDP court battles and asserted that he personally intervened to stabilize the party’s leadership. He said, “Damagum does not even know who his lawyer was when we went to court. That was how we were able to stabilize and keep Damagum.”
Wike also accused Damagum of prioritizing financial gain over loyalty or principle, stating, “But you see, as a tax collector, he will always be. Damagum is a tax collector. He doesn’t need to work with FIRS, he is a company tax collector… They think money is everything in life. They think they can never be steadfast.”
Challenging Damagum to take legal action if he felt defamed, Wike said, “Let Damagum challenge me. Let him go to court and sue me and say, ‘Look, this was what the minister said about me.’ He knows he cannot.”
The minister’s remarks came amid escalating internal divisions within the PDP, with rival factions led by Damagum and Samuel Anyanwu. Wike also criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for leaving the party, claiming Atiku’s departure was inevitable given his history of destabilizing the PDP. He added, “Atiku has no choice but to go. Someone who wants to use the PDP, knowing that I am there, cannot get that platform… Remember how many times he left and came back to the PDP.”
Wike further dismissed accusations that he was secretly working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), calling the claims hypocritical in light of many of his critics defecting to the APC. When asked about their departure, he responded, “They have never been committed.”
