According to Nivo News, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Tuesday after a routine meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Idris stated that President Tinubu remains calm and focused, adopting a comprehensive diplomatic strategy aimed at addressing Washington’s concerns through dialogue, coordination, and transparency.
“The issue of the U.S. threats came up, and we discussed it extensively with Mr President,” Idris said. “He is calm and working to ensure that the international community understands what Nigeria has been doing. Just two weeks ago, Mr President restructured the Armed Forces with the appointment of new service chiefs — measures that were already in motion before the U.S. concerns arose, reflecting his commitment to keeping Nigeria safe for all.”
The minister emphasized that the government prefers constructive engagement over inflammatory rhetoric, revealing that new communication channels have been opened with global institutions to improve understanding of Nigeria’s ongoing security reforms.
He also disclosed that President Tinubu has continued to hold consultations with Christian and Muslim leaders to promote unity and counter divisive narratives across the nation.
“It’s a multi-dimensional approach,” Idris explained. “Mr President has been engaging religious leaders and will continue to do so because they are key stakeholders in the Nigerian project.”
He further assured that relevant government agencies are actively addressing both domestic and international concerns through sustained dialogue and cooperation.
Responding to allegations of religious intolerance, Idris dismissed them as baseless and misleading. “It is absolutely false to portray Nigeria as a country intolerant of religion. What we are dealing with are extremist elements trying to divide the nation,” he said.
The minister urged Nigerians to remain united, stressing that “this is not a time for division or rhetoric, but a time for nation-building.”
He reiterated that all relevant authorities are handling the issue “with the depth it requires,” adding that President Tinubu remains determined to protect Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.
Trump had, over the weekend, threatened military action against Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians, stating on his Truth Social platform that he had directed the U.S. Department of War to “prepare for possible action” and warning that Washington would cut off aid to Nigeria if the situation persisted.
Idris reaffirmed that President Tinubu will continue to engage constructively with the U.S., regional bodies, and continental partners to strengthen collaboration against terrorism and correct misconceptions about Nigeria’s human rights and religious landscape.
“Mr President is calm, focused, and taking the issue seriously. All authorities are addressing it with the required depth, and we believe Nigeria will emerge stronger,” the minister concluded.
