Outrage In Senate As Buhari’s Rail Projects Face Scrutiny After Multiple Derailments.
The Senate has launched a comprehensive investigation into railway projects executed during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, following recurring derailments, vandalism, and technical failures along the Itakpe–Warri standard gauge corridor.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the decision followed a motion by Senator Ede Dafinone (APC – Delta Central), who raised alarm over the persistent technical breakdowns on the corridor, despite its recent commissioning. The Senate consequently set up an ad hoc committee with a six-week mandate to examine the Itakpe–Warri line and other rail projects completed under the Buhari administration.
Dafinone revealed that the corridor had recorded at least ten derailments and several service disruptions between 2023 and 2025, posing serious risks to passengers and eroding public trust in the nation’s rail system. He questioned the quality of construction, supervision, and maintenance, while urging the Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to carry out an independent technical audit and implement corrective measures.
He further called for an oversight visit by the Senate Committee on Land Transport to the affected sections—particularly around Agbor in Delta State—and advocated for the establishment of a National Rail Safety and Standards Unit to ensure adherence to global best practices. Dafinone also pushed for the speedy completion of the planned extension of the Itakpe line to Abuja to decongest existing routes.
Supporting the motion, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP – Bauchi Central) described the frequent breakdowns as “a national embarrassment,” noting that billions of dollars were borrowed to finance the projects during the Buhari era. He stressed the need for accountability, stating that it was unacceptable for such huge investments to fail only a few years after completion.
Senator Patrick Ndubueze (Imo North) called for a total overhaul of the NRC, insisting that the corporation had “failed to live up to its mandate.” Similarly, Senator Solomon Adeola (APC – Ogun West) demanded transparency in loan utilisation, contract awards, and project supervision. Other lawmakers urged the Senate to extend the probe to all Buhari-era railway projects, arguing that the pattern of failures pointed to systemic lapses.
Senator Babangida Hussaini (Jigawa North-West) blamed poor project planning and weak maintenance culture for the frequent derailments, lamenting that the same contractors had delivered higher-quality rail systems in other African countries.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the lawmakers for their contributions and described the motion as timely and necessary to safeguard lives and national assets. He emphasised that the issue transcended politics, calling for a thorough probe into every stage of the projects—from loan acquisition to execution and maintenance.
At the end of deliberations, the Senate directed the Ministry of Transportation and the NRC to immediately repair the Itakpe–Warri line, deploy additional coaches, and enhance safety protocols. It also mandated the Senate Committee on Land Transport to conduct a full investigation into all rail projects completed during the Buhari administration and endorsed the creation of a National Rail Safety and Standards Unit.
