Published

on

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s political journey toward leading Anambra State began in 2009 when he first declared his ambition to contest the February 2010 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite his strong credentials, he lost to Peter Obi, the then-candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Soludo later left the PDP on July 17, 2013, to join APGA in preparation for the November 2013 governorship race. However, his bid was cut short in mid-August 2013 when the party’s screening committee disqualified him alongside five other aspirants.

Undeterred, Soludo made a remarkable comeback in 2021. After a rigorous primary election process, he secured APGA’s ticket, traversed communities across Anambra State to share his vision, and ultimately emerged victorious at the polls.

An accomplished economist, Soludo’s life story reflects resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his dreams. His professional and academic journey stands as a testament to excellence and perseverance.

Born on July 28, 1960, in Isuanioma, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, Soludo is the son of Pa Simeon Soludo. His mother, Mgbafor, passed away during the Nigerian Civil War when he was only eight years old.

He graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1984, obtained his MSc in 1987, and completed his PhD in 1989—all from the same institution, where he emerged as the best student at every level. He later rose to the rank of Professor of Economics in 1998.

Throughout his academic career, Soludo authored over 82 scholarly publications and became a visiting professor at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, USA, in 1999. He also taught and trained at prestigious institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Warwick, The Brookings Institution in Washington D.C., and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, among others.

Beyond academia, Soludo has consulted for several global organisations, including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), European Union (EU), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), African Development Bank (AfDB), African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In 2003, he served as Chief Economic Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and was appointed Chief Executive of the National Planning Commission. His outstanding performance led to his appointment as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in May 2004, where he spearheaded the landmark banking consolidation reforms.

In September 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari named him a member of the newly established eight-member Economic Advisory Council (EAC), which reports directly to the President.

For his contributions to national development, Soludo was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), Nigeria’s third-highest honour.

As the Anambra governorship election approaches on November 8, 2025, Governor Soludo remains confident of securing a second term in office, facing strong opposition from Ukachukwu Nicholas of the All Progressives Congress (APC), George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP), and Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
