SERAP Sues Senate, House Leadership Over ₦3 Million Bribe Allegations.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal action against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, over alleged failure to investigate claims that lawmakers pay between ₦1 million and ₦3 million to sponsor or present bills, motions, and petitions in the National Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, under suit number FHC/L/CS/2214/2025, SERAP is seeking a court order compelling Akpabio and Abbas, representing all National Assembly members, to refer the alleged bribery cases to anti-corruption agencies for investigation and prosecution.
The lawsuit follows viral claims by Ibrahim Auyo, a House of Representatives member for Jigawa State (APC), who alleged that legislators pay substantial sums to have their bills or motions considered. In a video recorded in Hausa, Auyo said, “Since I was elected in 2015, no individual has given me a bill to pass. Bills and petitions are paid for. You have to pay from ₦3 million, ₦2 million, or ₦1 million to present it. After presenting a bill, you must lobby all 360 members to accept it.”
SERAP described the alleged practice as a serious breach of public trust and a violation of the constitutional oath of office by lawmakers. The organisation stressed that bribery should have no influence over legislative duties and warned that such actions undermine Nigeria’s democracy and erode public confidence in governance.
The rights group is also seeking a court order to ensure that Ibrahim Auyo is protected as a whistleblower under the UN Convention Against Corruption, to which Nigeria is a signatory. SERAP stated that Auyo’s disclosures on the so-called ₦3 million “Bribe-for-Bills” scheme are in the public interest and that investigating the allegations would reinforce trust in democratic institutions and strengthen the rule of law.
Represented by lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare, Kehinde Oyewumi, and Andrew Nwankwo, SERAP argued that the National Assembly must operate transparently and in the public interest. The organisation warned that ignoring the allegations would entrench a culture of impunity and weaken Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework.
The bribery claims gained public attention in late October after Auyo’s video circulated on social media, sparking widespread outrage. Neither Akpabio nor Abbas has publicly responded, and no formal investigation has been announced. The case, aimed at holding the National Assembly leadership accountable for transparency and ethical governance, has not yet been scheduled for hearing.
