Tension In Bissau As Military Foils High-Level Coup Attempt.
According to Nivo News, Guinea-Bissau’s military has announced the successful foiling of an attempted coup barely days before the country’s much-anticipated general elections. Several senior military officers were reportedly arrested for plotting to disrupt the constitutional order and destabilize the electoral process.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Deputy Chief of Staff, General Mamadu Ture, made the revelation during a press briefing in Bissau, confirming that the suspects were apprehended in a coordinated overnight operation involving the army and state security services. He explained that the planned coup was intended to derail the upcoming polls scheduled for November but declined to disclose the number of officers detained or details of their plot.
The development comes just a day before the official commencement of political campaigns for the legislative and presidential elections. The contests are expected to be dominated by incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, following the exclusion of the main opposition party from the race.
Addressing journalists after a cabinet meeting on Thursday, President Embalo warned against any attempt to undermine peace and order during the election period. He stressed that the government would not condone unrest, assuring that adequate measures had been taken to safeguard all candidates and ensure a smooth campaign process.
Military sources revealed that Brigadier General Daba Nawalna, director of a military training facility located about 30 kilometres from the capital, Bissau, was among those detained. Nawalna is suspected to be one of the key figures behind the foiled plot.
Security presence across Bissau has since been intensified, with armed soldiers deployed to guard major government institutions and strategic public areas.
Guinea-Bissau, a small Portuguese-speaking nation in West Africa, has a long history of political turbulence marked by coups and internal military conflicts since its independence from Portugal in 1974. Despite past instability, the country has made steady strides toward democratic governance since its 2014 elections.
