In his monthly Captain’s Column for the Saudi Pro League website, the Al-Kholood defender emphasized the importance of perseverance as Nigeria prepares for its decisive play-off against Gabon in Rabat, Morocco. “Although our journey continues, I hope my teammates and I can draw motivation from Saudi Arabia’s achievement and compete alongside them on the world stage next summer,” he wrote.
Nigeria will face Gabon on November 13 in the first semi-final of the CAF play-offs at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium. The winner will then meet either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final on November 16, with the victor advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs and a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Reflecting on recent fixtures, Troost-Ekong said October brought renewed optimism for both club and country. He recalled Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Lesotho, in which he scored a penalty to give the team the lead, and highlighted Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick in the subsequent win against Benin as a pivotal moment that reignited national hopes.
Troost-Ekong also praised Frank Onyeka’s late goal that secured Nigeria’s progression to the play-offs, describing it as a testament to the team’s resilience and quality. He further lauded the Saudi Arabian national team, the first Asian side to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, noting that their success reflects a growing football culture and dedication to nurturing homegrown talent—a principle he believes resonates across Africa.
