Shock Defection: Entire Enugu House Caucus Dumps PDP, LP for APC

All members of Enugu State’s House of Representatives caucus have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), formally declaring their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) on Thursday. According to Nivo News, the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the defections during plenary after reading the resignation letters submitted by the lawmakers. The lawmakers explained that their decision to leave their former parties was driven by persistent internal crises that threatened the stability of the opposition. Following the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party held seven of Enugu’s eight House of Representatives seats, while the PDP controlled one. With Thursday’s defection, the APC now holds full control of the Enugu caucus in the House.

Speaking to journalists, Nnolim Nnaji, the spokesman of the caucus and representative of Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency, said the move was motivated by a desire to align with Governor Mbah’s administration and the ruling party at the federal level. “The governor is doing a lot for our people. We want to bring our state closer to the centre of national development,” he said.

Nnaji described the defection as a strategic step forward, emphasizing that it was aimed at ensuring Enugu plays an active role in national progress. He added that joining the APC would create opportunities for increased development, including more projects, jobs, and empowerment programs for youths, women, and communities.

Lawmakers involved in the defection include Martins Oke, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nnamdi Agbo, Nnolim Nnaji, and Mark Obetta. Additionally, Daniel Asama, representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, also left the Labour Party for the APC.
