Powering Progress: NERC Set to Commemorate 20 Years of Electricity Market Transformation.

According to Nivo News, the Commission revealed in a statement that it will mark the milestone with a series of events highlighting its achievements and future plans for Nigeria’s power sector.
Established on October 31, 2005, under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) — now succeeded by the Electricity Act 2023 — NERC has played a pivotal role in reforming the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). Over the past two decades, the Commission has driven policies that promote transparency, strengthen consumer rights, and encourage sustainable investment within the sector.
The statement noted that the anniversary celebration will serve as a reflection on NERC’s journey from its early years through the unbundling and privatisation of key power assets, to the regulation of the electricity market’s transitional phases. The Commission has also overseen the industry’s progress from the Interim Market to the Transition Electricity Market, ensuring effective governance at every stage.
To commemorate this landmark, NERC will organise a lineup of events, including stakeholder sessions, technical discussions, and public engagement activities. These will bring together representatives from government, the private sector, development partners, and consumer advocacy groups to assess the industry’s progress and set new goals for its future.
Speaking ahead of the celebrations, NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, described the 20th anniversary as both a milestone and a reaffirmation of the Commission’s core mandate. “This anniversary reinforces our commitment to protect consumers, promote investment, and ensure a level playing field across Nigeria’s electricity market,” Dr. Oseni said.
He added that NERC remains dedicated to implementing reforms that deliver tangible value to Nigerians while fostering innovation and collaboration in the energy ecosystem.
Highlights of the celebration will include a technical session featuring power sector experts, a debate contest on energy-saving practices for secondary school students, and a commemorative dinner honouring pioneer staff, past commissioners, and deceased members of the Commission.
As NERC looks to the future, the management reaffirmed its mission to regulate the electricity industry in the public interest, balancing consumer needs with operators’ responsibilities while supporting Nigeria’s ongoing energy transition.
