Nigeria Vows To End Tuberculosis By 2030 Without Relying On Foreign Aid – First Lady.
According to Nivo News, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized that the country’s fight against tuberculosis (TB) must not rely solely on foreign aid, highlighting efforts to build resilient health systems and local capacity to eradicate the disease by 2030. Senator Tinubu noted that despite temporary fluctuations in donor support, Nigeria’s commitment to combating TB has remained steady, with no reduction in the number of people diagnosed and treated in 2025. According to her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady stated, “Through steadfast leadership, community engagement, and strategic national coordination, we have ensured that the number of people diagnosed and treated for TB in 2025 did not decline. This stands as a testament to the power of country ownership and the unwavering commitment of Nigerians who continue to drive this response forward, even in the face of uncertainty.”
As both Global and National Stop TB Champion, Mrs. Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s determination to eliminate TB by 2030 under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She stressed that “Health for all begins in our communities,” adding that TB remains the world’s deadliest infectious disease, claiming nearly 1.3 million lives annually. In Nigeria alone, approximately 479,000 people contracted TB in 2023, with over 150,000 fatalities.
The First Lady commended the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Stop TB Partnership, and other partners for their transparency and commitment to expanding access to testing, diagnosis, and treatment. At the meeting, the Chair of the Stop TB Partnership Board and Philippines Secretary of Health, Teodoro Herbosa, described TB as “more than a health issue but a development challenge,” calling for continuous innovation, including the use of AI and digital tools for early detection and treatment.
The Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership, Dr. Lucica Ditiu, urged countries to strengthen political commitment, build sustainable healthcare systems, integrate TB services into primary healthcare, and empower communities and survivors to lead the response. Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, also attended the event. The previous 38th Stop TB Partnership Board Meeting was held in Abuja in 2024.
