Madugu Extends Reign As Super Falcons Coach With New Two-Year Deal.
Super Falcons head coach, Justine Madugu, has officially confirmed that he has signed a new two-year contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, extending his tenure in charge of the national women’s team until 2027.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the 61-year-old tactician made the disclosure on Tuesday following the Super Falcons’ qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria secured their spot in the continental showpiece after playing a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic in Abeokuta, advancing on a 3-1 aggregate scoreline.
“I have been given a new contract from October 1, 2025, till October 1, 2027,” Madugu told reporters after the match.
While expressing his joy over the team’s qualification, Madugu admitted that the performance was below expectation. “The draw didn’t come as a surprise because we knew it would be a tough game. The Beninoise team gave us a real challenge,” he noted.
He also tendered an apology to Nigerians for the team’s display, acknowledging that fans’ expectations are always high whenever the Falcons take to the pitch. “Sometimes, there can be off days or bad days, and we’ll consider today’s game from that perspective,” he said.
Madugu described the result as a necessary “wake-up call” as the team begins preparations for the 2026 WAFCON, which doubles as the African qualifiers for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“We’re not disappointed. We’re taking it as a wake-up call to realise there’s still a lot of work ahead,” he added.
In Tuesday’s game, defender Ashleigh Plumptre netted her first goal for Nigeria in the 12th minute from an Esther Okoronkwo corner, before Benin equalised in the second half. The result, however, was enough to send the nine-time African champions through to the next tournament.
With his new deal sealed, Madugu is now focused on building a stronger and more competitive squad ahead of the WAFCON, which is scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
