The accused, facing 13 counts related to conspiracy and murder, reportedly had an encounter with the late inspector during a stop-and-search operation near Taaba Police while traveling to Akwa Ibom for a traditional marriage.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Augusta Chukwu ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a direct link between the accused and the alleged crimes. Consequently, Joy Uwheraka, Shirley Wealth, Napoleon Uwheraka, Ejiro Ejogbamu, Moses Agege, Precious Iyot, Kikelomo Odusanyo, Wealth Ojoh, Efeoghene Uwheraka, Ighofose Oke, Blessing Ovie, and Emeka Joshua were formally acquitted.
Justice Chukwu also ordered N1 million each in compensation for unlawful arrest and detention. Speaking after the verdict, one of the defence lawyers, Robert Igwere, praised the ruling, stating that it upheld justice for the defendants, society, and the victim.
Meanwhile, the prosecution, represented by Celestine Dickson, indicated that police authorities would review the judgment before determining further action. Dickson noted that the legal team would meet with police officials to assess the judgment and advise on subsequent steps.
