Court Fixes December 1 For Hearing In Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Defamation Battle.

Published

on

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has adjourned to December 1, 2025, the hearing of a preliminary objection filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in her ongoing defamation trial involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Justice Chizoba Oji fixed the new date after the prosecuting counsel, David Kaswe, informed the court that the prosecution’s counter to the objection was mistakenly served at the wrong address. Kaswe requested a short adjournment to enable proper service on the senator’s legal team.

The Kogi Central lawmaker, who was arraigned on June 19 on a three-count charge bordering on harmful imputation, faces allegations of making statements capable of damaging the reputations of Akpabio and Bello. The charges, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, claim Akpoti-Uduaghan falsely alleged that both men conspired to kill her and were connected to the death of the late Miss Iniobong Umoren.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges during her initial arraignment. Her lead counsel, Ehighioge West-Idahosa (SAN), told the court that the prosecution’s response to their preliminary objection had not been properly served on any member of the defence team. He also requested a longer adjournment, citing the defence team’s upcoming participation in the International Bar Association’s annual conference in Canada.

Justice Oji, after hearing submissions from both sides, granted the adjournment to December 1 for the hearing of the objection.

During the previous sitting on September 23, West-Idahosa had argued that the Office of the Attorney-General abused its prosecutorial powers by filing the charges, stressing that the objection raised was a jurisdictional challenge questioning the validity of the entire process.

The case, which has attracted widespread attention, stems from the senator’s public claims linking the Senate President and the former Kogi governor to an alleged assassination plot and the murder of Miss Umoren. The AGF’s office subsequently filed criminal charges against her for alleged defamation and injurious falsehood—issues that continue to spark debates over the boundaries of free speech and prosecutorial authority in Nigeria.

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
