According to Nivo News, the Hisbah Board discovered that the purported engagement was a ploy by both individuals to avoid legal punishment over earlier charges of immoral conduct filed against them.
Deputy Commander of the Hisbah Board, Dr Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, confirmed the development on Saturday, stating that the proposed marriage lacked sincerity and mutual understanding. “After our investigation, we found that the relationship was merely a strategy to evade legal consequences. The board decided to cancel the wedding to prevent future disputes,” he said.
Aminuddeen disclosed that the couple had initially undergone medical tests to verify compatibility, but the process was suspended after the investigation’s outcome. He added that the case might return to court if unresolved.
The controversy began after Magistrate Halima Wali of a Kano Magistrate Court stepped down her ruling on charges of immoral conduct filed by the Kano State Censorship Board against Wushirya and Yar Guda, following a viral video involving the pair.
During the hearing, both defendants confessed to being lovers and expressed their intention to marry. The magistrate subsequently gave the Hisbah Board 60 days to facilitate the marriage in accordance with Islamic principles, with instructions to revert to court if the wedding did not occur.
The court’s decision stirred public debate, with some critics accusing the judiciary of enforcing a forced marriage. However, the Kano State Judiciary dismissed the allegation, describing it as a gross misunderstanding of the court proceedings.
Judiciary spokesperson, Baba Jibo, clarified that Magistrate Wali never issued an order compelling marriage but merely suspended her ruling in response to the couple’s open confession. “The court’s records are clear. What happened was a fair decision to allow Hisbah to oversee the formalisation of a relationship both parties claimed was mutual,” he explained.
Jibo further noted that during the court session, Bashira Yar Guda declared her willingness to marry Idris only if he secured his own residence rather than a rented one — a condition that reflected her consent rather than coercion.
