Sowore’s Detention Sparks Outrage As Police Give Fresh Clarification.
According to Nivo News, the Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports suggesting that former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, was rearrested on fresh charges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that contrary to circulating media claims, Sowore was not apprehended over any new allegations and would not be re-arraigned in court on Monday, as reported by some outlets.
It was earlier reported that Sowore was taken into custody in Abuja shortly after being granted bail by Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’d of the Kuje Magistrate Court. The activist, along with 13 others, had been detained for participating in a protest demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The arrest, which occurred outside the court premises, sparked speculation that Sowore’s detention was tied to new charges. However, Hundeyin clarified that Sowore was not rearrested but remanded in prison as part of the court’s directive pending fulfillment of his bail conditions.
In his words, “The claim that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arraigned on Monday is procedurally incorrect. No person arrested on new charges can be taken directly to prison without a remand warrant issued by a competent court. Sowore was taken to prison as instructed by the remand warrant until he meets his bail conditions—nothing more.”
