Onanuga Explodes: Tinubu’s Aide Calls ARISE TV’s Rufai Oseni “Economic Illiterate.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has lashed out at ARISE Television presenter Rufai Oseni following the journalist’s criticism of the federal government’s management of Nigeria’s debt profile.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Oseni had earlier shared a publication accusing President Tinubu of being responsible for the nation’s growing debt burden. Responding to the claim, Onanuga described the broadcaster as an “economic illiterate,” insisting that Nigeria’s borrowing practices remain within permissible limits.
In a post shared online, Onanuga wrote, “You are an economic illiterate! All sovereign nations borrow money. Our borrowing has not breached the limit by the rule.”
Reacting to the attack, Rufai Oseni urged Onanuga to respond with facts rather than insults. He wrote, “Dear Egbon Bayo, you don’t need to abuse me and call me economic illiterate because I stated Nigeria’s debt! Challenge me with facts. Love and respect despite your abuses. You can make your point without name-calling. Why call me an economic illiterate because I stated facts? Kindly provide contrary evidence that Nigeria is not owing ₦152 trillion.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has defended the government’s borrowing policy, maintaining that debt is a legitimate and sustainable part of any national budget.
FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, while addressing journalists during the Presidential Communications Team’s “Meet-the-Press” session at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, explained that no nation funds its entire budget solely through revenue.
“Borrowing is not a problem; it’s part of every viable nation’s ecosystem. No country in the world survives entirely on its own revenue,” Adedeji stated. He emphasized that borrowing circulates money through interest payments, salaries, and taxes, creating a sustainable financial cycle.
Adedeji further clarified that every budget comprises three main elements—expenditure, revenue, and loans—and as long as the government borrows within limits approved by the National Assembly, there should be no cause for alarm.
