Police Break Silence On Sowore’s Arrest, Reveal “Clear Violation” Of Court Order.
The Nigeria Police Force has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), by its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the activist was apprehended for allegedly leading protesters into a restricted area in Abuja, in violation of an existing court order.
Hundeyin, while addressing journalists on Thursday, stated that Sowore’s arrest followed confessions from previously detained protesters who claimed he led them into the restricted zone despite being aware of the court’s directive.
“Today, Omoyele Sowore has been arrested by the Nigerian Police Force. You may ask why he was arrested. The reason is straightforward. The thirteen people earlier arrested all confirmed that Sowore led them into the restricted area, in clear contravention of the court order,” Hundeyin explained.
He emphasized that it would be unfair to prosecute those previously detained without also bringing charges against the individual accused of spearheading the protest.
The police spokesperson revealed that eight people were initially arrested on Monday in front of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, while another five were apprehended near the Ministry of Finance, making a total of thirteen suspects. They were reportedly arraigned within 24 hours of their arrest.
Hundeyin added that Sowore would be charged to court once investigations are concluded, reiterating that the demonstration violated a restriction order issued to preserve public order in parts of the capital city.
