Nnamdi Kanu Fires Entire Legal Team, Declares He’ll Defend Himself in Court.
Detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed his entire legal team and informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that he would henceforth represent himself in his ongoing terrorism trial.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Kanu made the announcement during Thursday’s proceedings before Justice James Omotosho. The development came after his lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), informed the court that they appeared out of respect for the bench but were officially withdrawing from the case.
Agabi stated that their withdrawal was due to Kanu’s decision to personally take charge of his defence, a move his legal team said they respected. Other senior advocates who also withdrew include Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), Joseph Akubo (SAN), Paul Erokoro (SAN), and Emeka Etiaba (SAN).
Following the withdrawal, Justice Omotosho confirmed the development from Kanu directly, who reaffirmed his decision to dismiss his lawyers and proceed on his own. The judge then directed all remaining members of Kanu’s legal team, excluding the senior advocates, to leave the courtroom.
When invited to open his defence, Kanu instead raised an objection, challenging the court’s jurisdiction to continue the trial. He argued that the Federal Government, through the prosecution, was in contempt of a Court of Appeal judgment which, according to him, had acquitted him.
Kanu further contended that the laws under which he was charged — the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013 and the Customs and Excise Act — had been repealed. He also claimed that his prolonged detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) had denied him adequate access to his lawyers, thereby breaching his right to a fair hearing.
In addition, he alleged that a medical report submitted by a Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) panel, which declared him fit for trial, was forged, maintaining that he was never examined nor subjected to any medical tests. He urged the court to declare the ongoing proceedings void and order his immediate release.
Responding, prosecuting counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) dismissed Kanu’s claims, insisting that his allegations lacked evidential backing since they were not presented in a sworn affidavit. Awomolo noted that the Court of Appeal judgment Kanu referenced had already been set aside by the Supreme Court on December 15, 2023.
Justice Omotosho, in his ruling, reminded the court that all the issues raised by Kanu had previously been addressed in the court’s ruling on September 26, which found that he had a case to answer. The judge also clarified that the medical report in question had been duly admitted and acted upon by the court.
Appealing for calm, Justice Omotosho urged Kanu to open his defence and conduct himself appropriately, emphasizing that it was his constitutional right to do so. However, Kanu requested more time to prepare for his defence, citing inadequate preparation time. His request was granted, and the case was adjourned to Friday, October 24, for continuation.
The judge also disclosed that the witness summons requested by Kanu — which include former and serving governors, ministers, and security chiefs — had been signed and were ready for collection.
