Police Charge Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Brother, 11 Others Over Abuja Protest.
The Nigeria Police Force has filed criminal charges against thirteen individuals, including Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, and Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel, for their alleged roles in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held across parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the accused were arraigned in two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) signed by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Adedayo Adekunle. Those named in the first FIR include Ejimakor, Prince Kanu, Joshua Emmanuel, Bishop Anyalewechi, Okere Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, and Godwill Obioma. The thirteenth suspect, Chima Onuchukwu, was listed separately in the second FIR.
The police charged them with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disobedience to a public officer’s order, and breach of public peace, offences said to be contrary to sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law. The FIRs allege that the suspects were arrested at different locations in Abuja while engaging in activities that disrupted traffic and public order, chanting war songs and calling for the release of Kanu, who is facing trial at the Federal High Court.
Ejimakor later confirmed via his X handle that he and others were remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre after the magistrate allegedly refused to entertain their submissions, insisting they remain in custody until Friday. He also accused authorities of deliberately taking the case to a court in Kuje, bypassing several other magistrate courts within Abuja.
Another of Kanu’s lawyers, Nnaemeka Ejiofor, revealed that the suspects were not properly arraigned, explaining that they sought time to consult with their counsel before proceedings began. He said bail applications have been filed but were yet to be served on the police.
Meanwhile, Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated during a live television appearance that Ejimakor, Prince Kanu, and others were arrested after they attempted to enter restricted areas around Transcorp during the demonstration. He stressed that the police would not tolerate actions capable of disrupting public order or disobeying lawful directives.
In a related development, the National Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Ibrahim Olaniyan, commended the police for what he described as a professional and constitutionally guided handling of the protest. He said the swift response demonstrated the force’s renewed commitment to professionalism, restraint, and respect for human rights.
Olaniyan also praised the move to prosecute the arrested protesters within 24 hours, describing it as a sign of accountability and adherence to due process. He further lauded residents of the Southeast for their calmness and understanding that the resolution of the Nnamdi Kanu matter should be achieved through lawful and political means rather than confrontation.
Normalcy has since returned to Abuja following the protest that caused temporary disruption of movement and business activities. However, a visible presence of security personnel remained across strategic parts of the city, particularly around the Federal Secretariat and Three Arms Zone, which were barricaded during the unrest.
Eyewitnesses said a minor incident occurred near the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Utako when security agents fired tear gas canisters to disperse a gathering. Security operatives also blocked access to Unity Fountain, the protest’s convergence point, and heavily armed personnel continued patrols across major routes.
The protest, convened by activist Omoyele Sowore, was aimed at demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since his extradition from Kenya in 2021 and is currently facing terrorism-related charges.
