Half Of Presidential Pardon Nominees May Be Dropped As Tinubu Orders Fresh Vetting.
According to Nivo News, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has ordered a comprehensive multi-agency review of the recently proposed presidential pardon list following allegations that unauthorized names were added by some low-level committee members.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
It was gathered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Nigeria Police Force are jointly conducting a fresh vetting exercise to ensure due diligence and integrity in the process.
Reliable sources disclosed that the review could lead to the removal of more than half of the individuals initially recommended for clemency. President Bola Tinubu is reportedly awaiting the outcome of the exercise before giving his final approval.
The President had earlier granted clemency to 175 inmates convicted of various offences as part of his constitutional prerogative of mercy. However, the decision sparked outrage after it emerged that some controversial names, including individuals allegedly linked to corruption and drug-related crimes, were included on the list.
Security and anti-graft agencies were said to have raised red flags, prompting the Attorney-General to suspend the approval process and initiate a full background check. Inside sources revealed that certain low-ranking officers in the pardon committee “smuggled in” names of individuals who did not meet the official criteria for pardon.
“Some low-level officers included names that were never recommended. The President is unaware of some of these insertions,” a senior security source disclosed. “The list has been sent to NDLEA and other agencies for proper review. Some cases are still active, and those affected remain in custody.”
A top official in the Office of the Attorney General confirmed that the screening was deliberately designed to prevent a recurrence of past controversies surrounding questionable pardons. The review, the official said, reflects President Tinubu’s directive to uphold transparency and accountability in all government processes.
Meanwhile, sources within the Presidency revealed that preliminary reports from the EFCC, ICPC, and NDLEA have already flagged several names currently under investigation. The agencies are expected to submit their final reports soon, after which the President will receive a vetted list for approval.
According to the insider, “From what I’ve seen, more than half of the nominees might be dropped once the findings are concluded. The government wants to ensure no one with ongoing corruption or criminal cases benefits from the pardon.”
