The league had initially scheduled the match for December 20 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. However, mounting criticism from clubs, players, and football authorities prompted the decision to withdraw the plan.
In a statement released on Tuesday, La Liga confirmed that the event’s promoter had pulled out, citing “uncertainty surrounding Spain in recent weeks” as the major reason for the cancellation. The league expressed disappointment over the development, noting that the initiative was meant to be a milestone in the internationalization of Spanish football.
“LaLiga deeply regrets that this project, which represented a historic and unparalleled opportunity for global expansion, cannot go ahead,” the statement read.
This marks another setback for La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas, who has long championed the idea of taking official matches abroad to boost the league’s global presence and commercial potential. Despite his efforts, the proposal has consistently faced strong opposition from players’ unions and governing bodies.
