According to Nivo News, the symbolic act, facilitated by PLAN International, formed part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl-Child. Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to advancing girl-child education across the country.

In a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima emphasized that the administration would continue to prioritize initiatives such as the school feeding programme, which he described as pivotal to enhancing children’s education and development.

During a meeting with a delegation from PLAN International, led by the organisation’s Director of Programme, Quality and Innovation, Helen Mfonobong Idiong, the Vice President invited Ogah to sit in his chair and address the nation as “Vice President for a day.”

He noted that research has consistently shown that “well-nourished children are well-formed,” and assured that the government would maintain close collaboration with PLAN International and other partners to strengthen interventions that improve girl-child education in Nigeria.

Shettima praised First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu as a shining example of what an empowered girl-child can achieve, recalling her active contributions to legislative debates on education and gender issues during her tenure in the Senate.

Taking her symbolic seat as Vice President, Joy Ogah expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigerian girls. She drew attention to the alarming statistics of over 10.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, with more than 60 percent being girls.

Ogah urged the government, policymakers, and stakeholders to take decisive action to make education safe, inclusive, and accessible to every child. She also called for the provision of free sanitary products in schools, adequate water and sanitation, and improved nutrition to support children’s wellbeing.

“We must invest in education that is safe and inclusive for every child in Nigeria,” Ogah stated, adding that protecting the rights of girls is essential to ensuring peace and progress.

She concluded with a powerful message: “I may be the Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets. Every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, dignity, and not silence.”

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.
