Court Blocks Police Attempt To Stop ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu Now’ Protest.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed an application filed by the Nigeria Police Force seeking to restrain the “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest, thereby clearing the way for the planned demonstration scheduled to take place on Monday, October 20, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had directed police lawyers to file an ex parte motion aimed at stopping activist and protest convener, Omoyele Sowore, from staging the rally near Aso Rock Villa, Nigeria’s seat of power.
Justice Umar of the Federal High Court declined to grant the police’s request, stating that Sowore must first be served with formal notice before any decision could be made. The judge consequently adjourned the matter until Tuesday, October 21, for proper hearing.
Reacting to the court’s ruling, Sowore hailed the decision as a triumph for democracy and civil liberties. In a statement shared on his handle (formerly Twitter), the activist reaffirmed his commitment to holding the peaceful protest as planned, stressing that it was a constitutional exercise intended to draw attention to the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest aims to demand Kanu’s immediate release and highlight concerns about his continued incarceration. The police’s attempt to block the rally was viewed by many observers as an effort to prevent a politically sensitive gathering close to the Presidential Villa.
Justice Umar’s ruling means that, for now, there is no legal restriction preventing the protest from going ahead. However, the final outcome of the adjourned hearing on Tuesday could determine whether further demonstrations are permitted.
As tensions build ahead of the planned protest, security analysts predict a possible standoff between demonstrators and law enforcement agencies near the nation’s power center. Sowore has, however, maintained that the rally will remain peaceful and within the confines of the law.
