Tinubu Will Never Surrender Nigeria’s Economic Power — Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Vows.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South, has reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not compromise Nigeria’s economic sovereignty amid global economic evaluations. Speaking during the Parliamentary Engagement session at the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington D.C., the lawmaker said the country’s economy has made significant progress, owing to the various reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Ibrahim urged global financial institutions to recognise the strides being made by one of Africa’s largest economies instead of downplaying the positive impacts of recent policy measures. He was responding to a recent World Bank report which claimed that about 139 million Nigerians are currently living in poverty.
The senator maintained that such assessments fail to reflect the ongoing structural reforms and government interventions aimed at improving citizens’ welfare. He reminded the institutions that the Tinubu administration had launched multiple social intervention programmes to cushion economic pressures, including the disbursement of N330 billion to 8.5 million vulnerable households through the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), with each beneficiary receiving at least N25,000 in conditional cash transfers.
He further highlighted the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, which seeks to ensure that Nigeria’s macroeconomic gains reach the grassroots. The initiative targets all 8,809 wards across the country, aiming to stimulate local economies, strengthen food security, and support at least 1,000 economically active citizens in each ward.
President Tinubu, through his media aide Sunday Dare, had earlier criticized the World Bank’s poverty report, stressing that the figures must be “properly contextualised” within the limitations of global poverty models. Dare explained that the World Bank’s estimate, based on a 2017 global poverty line of $2.15 per day, is a modelled projection and not an accurate reflection of living conditions in Nigeria.
The Presidency also noted that the benchmark, equivalent to about N100,000 per month at current exchange rates, far exceeds Nigeria’s new minimum wage of N70,000 and therefore cannot realistically represent the nation’s poverty rate.
Senator Ibrahim reiterated that Nigeria’s government remains firmly committed to economic sovereignty and sustainable reforms that prioritise the well-being of its citizens.
