No Work, No Pay: Enang Urges FG To Punish ASUU For Disobeying Court Order.
A former presidential aide and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ita Enang, has called on the Federal Government to file a contempt case against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for embarking on its warning strike, which commenced on Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Enang stated in Abuja that the strike was a direct violation of a subsisting court order obtained in 2023, which ruled that ASUU members were not entitled to salaries during any strike period.
He argued that ASUU’s insistence on payment of withheld salaries was tantamount to urging the Federal Government to disregard the court’s decision. “They are going on strike to compel the government to disobey a lawful court order. If you want to go on strike, you must be ready to forfeit your pay for that period,” Enang said.
The former lawmaker explained that in advanced countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, unions operate strike funds to support members during industrial actions since employers are not obligated to pay salaries in such circumstances.
Enang advised ASUU to immediately call off the strike and resume academic activities, noting that innocent students’ lives and academic progress had been severely disrupted. He maintained that those embarking on the strike must understand that the law demands forfeiture of wages for any period of work stoppage.
He further emphasized that the judgment of 2023 explicitly supported the government’s “no work, no pay” stance and that the court’s ruling, particularly in paragraph two, prohibited counting the strike period as part of work time.
Enang added that the Ministry of Education and the Federal Government had addressed most of ASUU’s grievances, insisting that the union’s renewed strike amounted to contempt of court. Citing relevant provisions of the Trade Dispute Act, he said the government’s policy aligns with both local and international labour laws.
He urged the Minister of Education to go beyond enforcing the “no work, no pay” rule and to instead charge ASUU with contempt, stressing that payment to striking workers would be a breach of the court’s ruling.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has distanced itself from ASUU’s ongoing strike. In a joint statement by its leaders, NAMDA clarified that it is an independent body solely representing the interests of medical lecturers and has no affiliation with ASUU’s industrial action.
NAMDA stated that it “will not be blackmailed or coerced” into joining the strike and emphasized that any withdrawal of service by its members would be done only in accordance with its constitution. The association warned that joining the strike could have grave implications for both the education and health sectors.
In a related development, Bishop Victor Adelakun of Victory International Church, Rehoboth Cathedral, Ibadan, has called for a balanced and honest resolution between the government and ASUU. He urged both parties to make mutual sacrifices to safeguard the future of Nigeria’s education sector.

reports that the troops, designated Nigerian Company 5 under the mission, departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft.
The Army, in a statement posted on its official social media platforms on Saturday, said the personnel arrived safely in Guinea-Bissau and had commenced their assignment under the mandate of the Economic Community of West African States.
Before their departure from the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Forward Operating Base in Abuja, the Chief of Operations, Maj. Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, urged the troops to maintain professionalism, discipline and operational excellence throughout the mission.
Saraso, represented by the Director of Peace Support Operations, Brig. Gen. M.M. Idris, charged them to serve as worthy representatives of the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the country.
He also directed the personnel to respect the laws and customs of Guinea-Bissau while carrying out their duties.
The troops were warned against sexual exploitation and abuse, substance abuse, indiscipline and irresponsible use of social media.
The Army said the deployment reflected Nigeria’s continued commitment to regional stability and its leadership role in ECOWAS peace support operations.
It added that Nigeria remained one of Africa’s major contributors to regional and international peacekeeping missions, drawing on decades of experience under ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations.
According to the statement, the latest deployment also highlighted Nigeria’s strategic role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and post-conflict stabilisation across the continent.
The ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau was established to support security sector reforms and preserve political stability following years of political crises and military interventions.
The mission succeeded the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau, which was deployed after the country’s 2012 coup.
It forms part of efforts by the regional bloc to protect constitutional order and prevent instability in Guinea-Bissau from developing into a wider security threat.
Nigeria has previously contributed troops, logistics and military leadership to peace missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.
