According to Nivo News, the distinguished diplomat and scholar passed away in the early hours of Monday at a hospital in New York, United States, with her daughter reportedly by her side.
Born on August 22, 1946, in Delta State, Ogwu was a highly respected academic and policy expert whose illustrious career traversed the fields of education, research, and international diplomacy.
She served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs between August 2006 and May 2007 during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The following year, she was appointed Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a post she held from 2008 to 2017—becoming the first Nigerian woman to occupy the prestigious position.
Before her ministerial appointment, Professor Ogwu was the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she gained international recognition for her deep knowledge of foreign policy, disarmament, and global relations.
Her decades-long service placed her at the forefront of Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements and policy formulation on the world stage.
Beyond her public service, Ogwu was a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment, human rights, and education. She played a major role in UNESCO-backed initiatives promoting human rights education in Nigerian schools and also served on the United Nations Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.
Her death marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s foreign service community, as tributes continue to pour in from across the globe celebrating her enduring legacy.
