Speaking at the Civil Society Town Hall Programme during the ongoing World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized the importance of institutional strength and debt reduction for long-term growth.
According to Nivo News, Georgieva downplayed the current impact of U.S. tariffs on global economies, explaining that the effect has lessened compared to earlier this year. She noted that the private sector has shown significant resilience, which signals an overall improvement in global economic performance.
“The impact of tariffs is not as dramatic as we feared. U.S. tariffs are lower today than they were last April,” she said, adding that many countries’ decisions not to retaliate have helped protect international trade.
Georgieva acknowledged that rising debt remains a major challenge, urging countries to “grow out of debt” through policies that foster sustainable development and reduce economic vulnerability. She emphasized the need for joint global efforts to support recovery and resolve the ongoing debt crisis.
Reflecting on economic progress over the past decades, the IMF boss highlighted that while the average standard of living has improved, deep inequalities and social discontent persist. “Many people, especially the young, are taking their disappointment to the streets—from Lima to Rabat, Paris to Nairobi—demanding better opportunities,” she said.
Georgieva further noted that the global economy is performing “better than feared, but worse than needed,” explaining that despite earlier forecasts of a potential U.S. recession, many advanced and emerging markets have remained resilient.
She added that the upcoming World Economic Outlook report would show only a slight slowdown in global growth, crediting improved policy fundamentals, the adaptability of the private sector, moderated tariff effects, and supportive financial conditions for sustaining economic resilience.
According to Nivo News, the IMF chief maintained that maintaining independent central banks and solid economic institutions remains crucial to navigating current global uncertainties and sustaining recovery.
