University Crisis: CONUA Rejects Strike, Insists On Academic Stability.
The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has distanced itself from reports suggesting its participation in any strike action within Nigeria’s university system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, CONUA, through a statement signed by its National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, dismissed social media rumours alleging that the union had joined the ongoing industrial action by university lecturers.
Dr. Sunmonu clarified that CONUA had not declared any strike, emphasizing the union’s unwavering commitment to maintaining academic stability, promoting excellence, and fostering constructive dialogue with the government and other stakeholders to ensure smooth academic operations across institutions.
He urged members of the union nationwide to continue carrying out their academic and administrative responsibilities diligently, engage students, and uphold professionalism in their various universities.
Sunmonu explained that there was no current basis for the union to declare a dispute or embark on strike action. He recalled that CONUA was deliberately excluded from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement when it was reconstituted in October 2024. However, following a formal protest, a meeting was held with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025, where the Minister assured that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions.
He confirmed that the Ministry of Education has recently fulfilled that commitment by expanding the committee to accommodate CONUA. Sunmonu noted that since none of the union’s issues with the Federal Government has reached a dispute stage, there is no justification for any strike action at this time.
Following nationwide congress meetings between September 18 and 24, members of CONUA unanimously reaffirmed their position against strikes, insisting that engagement, not disruption, remains the best strategy for advancing the Nigerian university system.
The CONUA President appealed to Vice Chancellors to protect and support members of the union who continue to discharge their legitimate duties, while also urging students to stay focused on their academic goals without fear of disruption.
Sunmonu reiterated that the union remains committed to promoting quality education, national development, and peaceful industrial relations, stressing that its focus is on building a sustainable, innovative, and productive academic environment for the benefit of students, scholars, and the nation at large.
He expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for supporting the union’s constructive approach toward advancing higher education in Nigeria.
