Tension At UNIBEN As CONUA Alleges ASUU Members Assaulted Lecturers During Exams.

The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), University of Benin chapter, has accused members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of physically assaulting its members during ongoing examinations at the institution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the chairman of CONUA, Comrade Ishaq Osagie-Eweka, alleged that some ASUU members invaded examination halls, disrupted academic activities, and forcefully ejected lecturers supervising the exams. He claimed that the attackers also harassed the vice chairperson of the union and destroyed mobile phones belonging to some members.

Eweka stated that evidence of the incident, including video footage, had been sent to the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, for verification. He maintained that the University of Benin was currently conducting examinations despite ASUU’s ongoing strike.

“It is your right as a union to withdraw services if you declare a strike,” Eweka said, “but it is unlawful to impose that decision on another union that chooses to continue its academic duties.”

He further called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, and other security agencies to intervene and protect CONUA members from intimidation and harassment.

“We are a peaceful and civil union that believes in dialogue, not confrontation,” he added. “We are engaging constructively with the government and remain confident that the welfare of our members will be addressed through mutual understanding.”

A lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, Professor Godspower Ekuobase, also confirmed the alleged attack. Efforts to reach the leadership of ASUU at the University of Benin for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.

Judicial Overreach? Enekweizu Vows NDC Deregistration Order Will Never Stand!.

Published

Ikenna Enekweizu, the National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has asserted that the recent Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, which set aside a previous order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC, will not withstand legal scrutiny.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Enekweizu highlighted several key points regarding the party’s legal standing during his interview with ARISE Television:

  • Deemed Registration: He explained that the court’s initial substantive judgment deemed the NDC to be registered, as the party had met all necessary requirements, yet INEC refused registration without justification.

  • Shifting Justifications: Enekweizu argued that INEC originally denied registration based on an alleged logo resemblance to the All Progressives Congress (APC), not the Peace Movement Party (PMP). He noted that INEC only introduced the PMP as a reason after the NDC had already initiated legal action.

  • Non-Existence of PMP: He maintained that the PMP is not a registered political party, nor was it among the 171 political associations that applied to INEC for registration.

  • Legal Inconsistency: Enekweizu contended that INEC admitted during the hearing that the logo did not resemble the APC’s and that the PMP was not a registered entity or an applicant, which he believes invalidates the commission’s justification for withholding registration.
