ONSA, NCC, NSCDC Smash Cartel Behind Telecom Infrastructure Vandalism.

Published

on

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have intensified joint operations to curb the vandalisation of telecommunications infrastructure across the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the coordinated effort, aimed at safeguarding Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), has recorded major success as the cartel behind recurring vandalisation of telecom facilities has been dismantled.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, who made this known at a Business Roundtable on broadband investment and protection of national infrastructure in Abuja, revealed that despite ongoing efforts, the country still witnessed over 20,000 fibre cuts and 4,000 cases of equipment theft between January and October last year.

Dr. Maida said the NCC is working closely with the NSCDC and the judiciary to ensure swift prosecution of those involved in such crimes. He lamented that over 20,000 instances of denied access to infrastructure sites were also recorded during the period, urging communities and stakeholders to take active roles in safeguarding vital national assets.

The NCC boss disclosed that mobile network operators have injected an additional $1 billion into the telecom sector. Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, announced that 20 states have already accessed the Federal Government and World Bank’s $750 million fund designed to improve the business environment and bridge infrastructure deficits nationwide.

Speaking through the Ministry’s Director of Finance, Malam Ali Mohammed, Edun explained that the initiative would tackle critical infrastructure gaps, particularly in the digital and technological sectors, in line with government’s vision to enhance productivity and economic growth.

Also in attendance were representatives from the ONSA, Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), World Bank, mobile network operators, and the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).

The NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, disclosed that 19 states have waived the Right of Way (RoW) charge of ₦145 per linear meter for fibre optic cable installation, while Katsina State Governor, Dr. Umar Radda, said his administration has set up community committees to protect national assets across all 360 wards.

Dr. Radda also highlighted Katsina’s ongoing investments in digital innovation and ICT infrastructure to create jobs and boost youth entrepreneurship.

Dr. Maida further noted that the telecom sector has experienced renewed investor confidence following tariff adjustments earlier in the year. Broadband penetration, he said, now stands at 48.8 percent, giving over 140 million Nigerians access to the internet.

Calling for total removal of RoW charges nationwide, the NCC boss emphasised that slow approval processes in some states were still hampering the sector’s growth. He revealed that though Nigeria has over 40,000 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure, only 10 percent of its capacity is currently being utilised.

Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Dr. Maida reaffirmed that the government remains committed to achieving the National Broadband Plan (2020–2025) target of 70 percent penetration and 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic network by the end of 2025.

He assured that the NCC will continue to drive broadband expansion, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and protect the industry amid current economic challenges.

FERMA’s South-East 2 Zonal Director, Suleiman Mohammed Omonowo, issued the warning during an inspection of the project, cautioning against the burning of tyres during celebrations, which he said could damage the road surface.

He noted that destructive practices by some youths and community members often contribute to the early failure of road projects across the country.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.

Court Orders UI To Reinstate Students Suspended Over Fee Hike Protest.

Published

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the University of Ibadan (UI) to reinstate three students suspended over their participation in a protest against tuition fee hikes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Nkeonye Maha set aside the decision of the university’s Central Student Disciplinary Committee, ruling that the students were denied fair hearing during the disciplinary process.

The court held that the failure to allow the students call witnesses and present evidence violated their constitutional right to fair hearing, rendering the sanctions against them invalid.

The affected students — Aduwo Ayodele, Mide Gbadegesin, and Nice Linus — were suspended on July 14, 2025, after taking part in a protest against increased school fees approved by the university’s governing council.

Dissatisfied with the suspension, they approached the court, arguing that the disciplinary proceedings breached their fundamental rights and due process.

They asked the court to quash the suspension, reinstate their studentship, and award damages for alleged rights violations.

In her ruling, Justice Maha agreed with their arguments, stating that the university’s actions failed to meet the standards of natural justice.

Following the judgment, rights group CAPPA hailed the decision, urging the university to comply fully, reinstate the students, and issue an apology.

The group said the ruling reinforces constitutional protections for freedom of expression and serves as a warning against the suppression of student protests in tertiary institutions.
