Eminent Nigerian statesmen and political figures have paid heartfelt tributes to the late Professor of Political Science and President of the Institute of Governance and Social Research (IGSR), Prof. Jonah Isawa Elaigwu, celebrating his lifetime contributions to leadership, federalism, and national development.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, former Heads of State—Generals Ibrahim Babangida, Yakubu Gowon, and Abdulsalami Abubakar—alongside former Senate Presidents David Mark and Iyorchia Ayu, and former Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye, were among the dignitaries who honoured the revered scholar during a Night of Tributes held in Abuja.

Born on March 10, 1948, in Otukpo, Benue State, Prof. Elaigwu passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 77. His death has been described by many as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s academic and intellectual community.

General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), represented by Ambassador Godwin Adama, hailed the late scholar as an “intellectual giant and patriot” whose ideas shaped national policies. He recounted their collaboration during his administration, where Prof. Elaigwu served in the Presidential Advisory Committee, contributing significantly to governance reforms and democratic experimentation. Babangida described him as “an easy-going, candid, and dependable colleague” who always carried out his duties with calmness and humility.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), represented by Ambassador Nicholas Ella, praised the late professor for his unwavering commitment to research and policy development. He described him as “a courageous and loyal educationist” who served Nigeria and humanity with excellence, adding that his advisory roles to global institutions such as the World Bank and UNDP underscored his international relevance.

For General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), represented by Solomon Asemota (SAN), the loss was deeply personal. He reminisced about meeting Prof. Elaigwu in 1978 after the latter’s return from Stanford University, where he completed his PhD. That encounter, Gowon revealed, led to Elaigwu’s critically acclaimed work Gowon: A Scholarly Biography of a Soldier-Statesman. He lauded the late professor as “a foremost authority on comparative federalism and civil-military relations,” whose scholarly legacy will endure through the institutions he founded.

Senator David Mark described Prof. Elaigwu as a “pathfinder and visionary thinker” whose intellectual depth and passion for nation-building transformed Nigeria’s academic and governance landscape. He noted that the late professor’s teachings transcended academia, shaping public policy and inspiring future leaders.

Former PDP Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, fondly recalled their years together at the University of Jos, describing Elaigwu as “a fair-minded and selfless teacher who mentored people from all backgrounds.” He urged the Institute of Governance and Social Research to compile and preserve all of the professor’s works for future generations.

Similarly, Senator Joshua Dariye eulogized the late scholar as a “towering figure in political science” and “a patriot who believed deeply in Nigeria’s unity and progress.” He described Elaigwu as an erudite author and consultant whose intellectual guidance was instrumental during his tenure as Plateau State governor.

The tributes reflected a unanimous sentiment — that with the passing of Prof. Jonah Isawa Elaigwu, Nigeria has lost not just an academic colossus, but a national treasure whose impact on governance, education, and nation-building will resonate for generations to come.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly opposed reported moves by the state government to revisit the alleged Offa robbery case involving former Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki and others.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

reports that Showunmi made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta on Friday.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
