Adebule Urges Lawmakers To Speed Up Lagos Innovation Bill For Research Breakthroughs.
According to Nivo News, Senator Idiat Adebule, representing Lagos West Senatorial District, has appealed to the Lagos State House of Assembly to expedite the passage of the Lagos Innovation Bill to establish a strong legal framework that will drive research and foster collaboration between industries and academia.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at the 7th Lagos State University (LASU) Research Trade Fair held at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, Ojo, Adebule emphasized that the bill, once enacted, would create a research and innovation fund to support innovation hubs, technology parks, and provide incentives for doctoral and post-doctoral research initiatives.
She maintained that the future of Lagos and Nigeria lies not in their natural resources but in their ability to innovate, collaborate, and scale creative solutions to global challenges. “The future of Lagos and Nigeria will not be determined by our exhaustible natural resources, but by how well we can innovate, collaborate and scale solutions using our resources,” she stated.
The senator urged government officials, industry leaders, academics, and community stakeholders to seize the opportunity to build a thriving innovation ecosystem capable of transforming Lagos and Nigeria into the continent’s hub of knowledge and creativity. She stressed that research must be applied to solving real societal challenges or risk remaining confined within academic walls.
Citing the example of Bell Labs, which pioneered technologies such as the laser, solar cell, mobile communications, and the internet, Adebule noted that societies that embrace innovation rise to prominence, while those that neglect it fade into obscurity.
In her address, LASU Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, described the fair as more than an academic exercise, but a demonstration of the university’s deep commitment to transforming research into practical solutions that drive development. She highlighted that the university’s research covers diverse fields, including engineering, medicine, humanities, and science, with projects tailored to address pressing societal problems.
Olatunji-Bello added that this year’s theme, “Promoting the Quadruple Helix Collaboration: Government, University, Industry, and Community,” underscores the importance of collective efforts in achieving sustainable development. She explained that maximum impact is only achieved when research aligns with community needs, noting that government provides the enabling environment, industry commercializes innovations, universities generate knowledge and talent, while communities validate their practical utility.
