Tinubu Names Prof. Amupitan As INEC Boss, Council Gives Unanimous Approval.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), a distinguished scholar from Kogi State in the North-Central region, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to Nivo News, the announcement was made by the presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, who revealed that the Council unanimously endorsed Amupitan’s nomination to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended in October 2025 after serving since 2015.
President Tinubu described Professor Amupitan as a man of integrity and the first person from Kogi State to be nominated for the role. The Council’s approval was supported by all members, including Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who commended the nominee’s impeccable character and professional credentials.
In line with constitutional provisions, President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
Professor Amupitan, aged 58, hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos and also serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State.
An accomplished academic and legal practitioner, Amupitan obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Jos in 1987 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. He holds an LLM from the same university, earned in 1993, and a PhD in Law obtained in 2007.
Over the years, he has served in several capacities at the University of Jos, including as Dean of the Faculty of Law, Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors, and Head of the Department of Public Law.
Beyond academia, he has held various national roles such as membership in the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Governing Council. He also sits on the board of Integrated Dairies Limited in Vom and previously served with Riss Oil Limited in Abuja.
A prolific author, Professor Amupitan has written extensively on corporate law and evidence, with notable works including Corporate Governance: Models and Principles (2008), Documentary Evidence in Nigeria (2008), Evidence Law: Theory and Practice in Nigeria (2013), Principles of Company Law (2013), and An Introduction to the Law of Trust in Nigeria (2014).
If confirmed by the Senate, Amupitan will officially take over as the nation’s chief electoral umpire, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu in steering Nigeria’s electoral process into a new era.
