Salah’s Double Secures Egypt’s Spot At 2026 World Cup.
Egypt secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Liverpool star Mohamed Salah scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Djibouti in Casablanca. Salah, who has scored nine goals during a qualifying campaign spanning two years, helped Egypt build an unassailable five-point lead in Group A with one match remaining.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 33-year-old, twice named African Footballer of the Year, recently helped Liverpool claim a record-equalling 20th Premier League title and won the Golden Boot with 29 goals last season. However, Salah has experienced a dip in form this season, registering just three goals in nine appearances across all competitions.
Egypt took the lead early through Ibrahim Adel in the eighth minute, before Salah scored in the 14th and 84th minutes to seal the win. While the Pharaohs have won the Africa Cup of Nations seven times, they have only qualified for the World Cup four times, including appearances in 1934, 1990, 2018, and now 2026.
Ghana is also on the verge of qualification after former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey scored in a 5-0 win against the Central African Republic in Meknes. The Black Stars need just one point from their final match against Comoros to secure their spot. Other scorers included Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana.
Cape Verde kept their World Cup hopes alive with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Libya in Tripoli. The Blue Sharks, who could qualify for their first World Cup, will secure top spot in Group D if they defeat Eswatini in Praia. Cape Verde currently leads Cameroon by two points, with the Indomitable Lions having eight previous World Cup appearances.
In Group D action, Cameroon beat Mauritius 2-0 with goals from Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu and Manchester United striker Bryan Mbeumo. The group winner earns direct qualification, while the runner-up could advance to the African mini-tournament in November, a stepping stone to the six-nation inter-continental playoffs next March.
Eswatini missed a chance to claim a rare win after conceding two early goals to South Africa-based Justice Figuareido in their match against Angola. Angola, under new French coach Patrice Beaumelle, recovered to draw 2-2 thanks to goals from Jonathan Buatu and Papel Ary, denying the hosts a long-awaited victory.
