“Nigeria’s Walking Corpses: The Hidden Toll Of Hypertension On A Nation Under Pressure”.
According to Nivo News, hypertension has quietly emerged as one of Nigeria’s most dangerous health threats, affecting millions of citizens—particularly professionals exposed to chronic stress and irregular lifestyles. A recent warning from cardiologist Prof. Dike Orji of the University of Abuja revealed that about 38.1 percent of the nation’s adult population—roughly 83.8 million people—are hypertensive, a figure experts describe as alarming.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reflecting on the crisis, a veteran journalist recounted his early days in the newsroom, where the intense pressure, poor diet, and lack of rest took a toll on many journalists’ health. He recalled that in the 1970s, the average sub-editor endured long working hours without proper meals or sleep, often surviving on snacks and soft drinks. Many succumbed to hypertension and other stress-related illnesses, earning journalists the reputation of being among the shortest-living professionals.
The writer described his own narrow escape from the same fate. Years of overwork and late-night meals almost ended his life, until his grandfather introduced him to herbal remedies that relieved his intestinal problems and stress-induced ailments. He later learned to manage stress through nutrition, herbal supplements, and lifestyle adjustments—avoiding harmful ingredients like Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), which contains excessive sodium known to worsen blood pressure.
He recalled losing colleagues such as Mr. Animashaun, a brilliant news editor, who collapsed and died from undiagnosed hypertension, and Alhaji Alade Odunewu, the respected columnist known for his “Walking Corpses” column, who battled the disease for years before passing away. Their deaths highlighted the invisible dangers of stress and untreated high blood pressure in high-pressure professions.
The journalist also recalled how Dr. Abiola, a medical director at June One Hospital in Lagos, once expressed shock at the number of journalists diagnosed with hypertension during routine medical checks. Yet, despite the warnings, the unrelenting pace of news production leaves little room for rest or recovery. From late-night editing to tight deadlines, many journalists continue to sacrifice their health for the job.
Hypertension has been dubbed “the silent killer” because its victims often feel no symptoms until it is too late. Medical experts say the condition silently damages the arteries and vital organs, leading to stroke, kidney failure, and heart disease. According to Nivo News, this reality should serve as a strong reminder to Nigerians—especially those in high-stress occupations—that preventive care, balanced nutrition, and rest are essential to survival.
As the veteran journalist noted, he has remained hypertension-free at 75, with his blood pressure averaging 110/70 to 120/80. He credits his longevity to conscious health management and the wisdom gained from decades of experience. His upcoming follow-up article, he revealed, will focus on natural supplements, herbs, and dietary practices that may help prevent and manage hypertension.
