Nigeria Races To Lead Global Chip Economy, Pioneering ‘Silicon Africa’.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, Nigeria is positioning itself to become a key player in the global semiconductor industry, an arena driving today’s technology-powered world. Semiconductors, the microchips that power everything from smartphones and data centers to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems, are in surging demand worldwide, projected to surpass $1.2 trillion by 2030. Against this backdrop, Nigeria is making strategic moves to establish itself as a hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Nigeria’s emergence as a semiconductor center is both necessary and timely. With a growing digital economy, an expanding tech ecosystem, and a youthful population exceeding 220 million—more than 60% under the age of 25—the country has a pressing need for homegrown solutions that reduce reliance on foreign imports and vulnerable supply chains. Africa’s digital economy is projected to reach $712 billion by 2050, with Nigeria expected to contribute the largest share, underscoring the country’s potential to lead the continent in this critical sector.

Currently, global semiconductor production is concentrated in a handful of countries, with Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States accounting for over 70% of manufacturing capacity. This leaves Africa heavily dependent on imports, exposing the continent to supply chain disruptions and inflated costs. Nigeria aims to reverse this trend by developing indigenous semiconductor capabilities, establishing a fabless ecosystem, and pioneering assembly, testing, and packaging (ATMP) for various chip types including QFN, QFP, and CSP.

To achieve this, Nigeria is investing in research and development, talent cultivation, and strategic partnerships, with plans to build Africa’s first semiconductor foundry tailored to local challenges such as energy efficiency, affordability, and durability. Collaboration between government, industry, academia, and investors is being prioritized to create an enabling environment that attracts investment, supports innovation, and fosters local manufacturing. Universities and technical institutions are being engaged to nurture the next generation of engineers and designers who will drive the sector forward.

The benefits of establishing Nigeria as a semiconductor hub extend far beyond technology. A thriving semiconductor sector is expected to diversify the economy, create high-value jobs, strengthen supply chains, increase exports, and enhance Africa’s technological sovereignty. By reducing dependence on external suppliers and fostering resilience against global uncertainties, Nigeria aims to transform from a technology-dependent nation into a technology exporter, effectively positioning Africa as a competitive player in the global chip economy.

As demand for semiconductors continues to grow, Nigeria’s leadership in the sector could catalyze regional collaboration, integrate African markets, and build a robust technology ecosystem that benefits the entire continent. With strategic focus, investment, and collaboration, Nigeria is poised to claim its place among the world’s technology leaders and lead the charge in what is now being called “Silicon Africa.”

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its intention to appeal a Federal High Court ruling that overturned a previous court order requiring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register it as a political party. • The court determined that all parties with vested interests should have been included in the original case, necessitating that the matter be heard again with all relevant parties properly joined.

  • This ruling restores the status quo that existed before the initial judgment while the substantive suit is pending.

  • C.S. Ekeocha, counsel for the PMP, contended that the NDC’s registration process utilized a logo previously submitted to INEC by the PMP, a claim the court found sufficient to warrant PMP’s involvement.

  • NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director stated that the party plans to obtain and study the text of the judgment to exercise its right to appeal.

  • The NDC maintains confidence in its legal position and remains committed to utilizing constitutional and appellate avenues to defend its registration.
