NECO In Trouble: Reps Demand Bank Records Over Suspected Budget Irregularities.
The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Basic Examination Bodies to investigate the National Examination Council (NECO) over allegations of unauthorized virement and irregular budget or Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) implementation from 2023 to date.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the directive followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Amobi Ogah during Thursday’s plenary session. The House resolved that the committee should scrutinize NECO’s bank statements, financial transactions, and budget performance within the specified period to ensure accountability and transparency.
Citing Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Ogah emphasized that the National Assembly possesses constitutional powers to summon government agencies and demand relevant documents for oversight purposes. He stated that NECO, as a revenue-generating agency of the federation, has a responsibility to account for funds it manages and must provide evidence of remittances to the federation account from 2023 till date.
The lawmaker expressed worry over reports that NECO may have executed virements—transfers of funds between budget lines—without prior legislative consent. He warned that such actions, if proven, constitute a violation of the Nigerian Constitution and undermine the authority of the National Assembly.
The committee is expected to commence the probe immediately and present its findings to the House for further legislative action.
